There are times we do not feel strong. We might face a challenge, a difficulty or want to achieve a goal that is crucially important.
When the Hebrew slaves left Egypt, we are told that God used the Divine breath – “With the blast of your nostrils…you exhaled with your wind” (Exodus 15: 8–10). The commentator Ramban connected this with a verse from Isaiah: (40:24): “Even if He were to blow on them, they would wither”.
We have power in our breath. The yogis call it prana or pranayama, the Taoists call it Chi – hence Tai Chi or Chi Kung, and for the Kabbalists it it Neshama or Ruach.
Sit comfortably and engage a powerful nostril breathing – pranayama, and feel your power rising. Let us meditate on these words from the great English sage known as Shakespeare:
“In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour’d rage;
