Today, Marcus recommends building courage and self confidence. I am going to tell you a little story which will encapsulate everything and provide the text, the basis, the grist to our mill.
HAVE COURAGE TO GO FOR WHAT YOU WANT
Here is the story. When my mother was about to turn 21, my father who had been dating her for over a year asked the question. He said to her, “What would you like for your 21st birthday gift?” She thought about it and replied, “I would like an engagement ring or a new boyfriend.”
How cool is that? My mother who was younger at the time than my father, in fact she still is younger than my father—some things never change—said an engagement ring or a new boyfriend. So I thought this could be really cool.
We will use this as the basis for ways to build courage and boost self confidence and how you can use it for your business, for winning more clients, for boosting your own relationships.
WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?
Point No. 1 is to define what you want. She was able to define that she wanted to get married. I want to get married to that gorgeous man from the Freed family, a thought many women have had over the years. So she defined what she wanted. So what do you want? What are you trying to achieve in your life or business or creative project? Be really clear and get that clarity.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DO NOT GO FOR IT?
Point No. 2: It is important to become aware of what happens if you do not take action immediately. If you do not take action within the next month, six months, twelve months. My mum was about to turn 21, so she was 20 at the time and aware that if she did not take action in six or twelve months then life can move on. Things were moving quickly back in the late ‘60s!
Think about it. If you do not take action in your business or your project right now and have to wait six months or a year or two before you do anything, how are you going to feel about it? Imagine yourself a year from today. Imagine you have not taken action on that project which was so important to you, What is the cost? How are you going to feel? How is your life going to be different or, more importantly, how is your life not going to be different? So number two, become aware. Really process this idea if you fail to take action immediately.
BE BOLD…BUT BE AWARE
Point No. 3: Is to take action. Just ask for what you want. If you want to build courage and self confidence well, I do not want to disappoint you but it is a bit of a yellow-bricked road and I am not the Wizard of Oz, but just ask for what you want. Be prepared to face rejection. Be prepared to take “no”.
I read a really good book recently by someone called Steve Chandler, in which he says, “Yes lives in the land of no.” In other words, in order to get to a yes, sometimes you have to hear a few nos. So ask for what you want.
GO FOR IT!
Here is a big secret about courage and self confidence – you have it all along! That is right, cowardly lion, you have the courage! Tin man, you have the brains. Scarecrow, you have the heart. Or it is the other way around? But you know what I mean. It is inside you, so get out there. Just remember – the “yeses” live in the land of “nos”. Just go and ask for stuff. Clarify what you want. Really be aware of what it is going to cost you if you do not take action and go and take that action.
