One of the 10 commandments precedes ‘thou shalt not murder’, stealing, committing adultery, and even taking God’s name in vain. Which one? “You shall not make yourself a carved image of any likeness of that which is in the heavens above or on the earth below” (Deut: 5:8). In our instagram-happy society, what could possibly wrong with the occasional graven image?
Kabbalistic terminology has many names for the Divine. The _Or Ein Sof_ has simultaneous resonances of classicism and new ageism. Or=Light Ein=Without Sof=End. Fair translations might be the Infinite Light, the Eternal Brightness, the Unending Illumination, although using words to describe something truly infinite is immediately limiting.
If we are created in the image of the Divine (Genesis 1:27) then we have this infinite aspect within ourselves. The question is; what are the subtle ways that you limit your own potential?
T-shirts may proclaim ‘No Fear,’ but truly eradicating our inner fears takes persistence, perseverance and perspiration. For the last year a couple of my teachers have coached me through some subtle inner fears that were holding me back in subtle ways. In the past my fear of rejection had prevented me from making important cold calls for my business, and this same fear stopped me from sending personal emails inviting friends & students to invest in my [new book project](http://igg.me/at/kabbalah-sutras). When we become present to the cost of not taking action, we can see what our fear is costing us.
The ‘graven image’ law continues by saying that the ‘sin of fathers upon children will be contented ] to the third and fourth generations’ (Deut: 5:9). This seems unfair until we retranslate ‘sin’ as error. When we consider that the errors of our great-grandparents might be alive and well in our everyday reality, the picture becomes more stark. We can inherit fears from our parents, and inherit flawed ways of thinking no matter how loving our family might be. We can identify these limitations, stop making the graven images within our mind, and tap into the Endless Light that is our birthright.
